What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction (or spiritual companioning) is an ongoing, one-on-one dialogue with a trained spiritual director. The director serves as a guide or witness, helping the directee see the presence and action of God in his or her life.

Rather than giving directions, the director helps the person listen for the Spirit's direction in his/her life. Common themes include finding God in life's changes, finding encouragement at every step in one's journey, and growth in prayer.

Who is it for? Anyone: people just beginning, even late in life, and people who have been on a spiritual path for some time. It's for people who have questions about what spirituality may mean to them and people who are going through tough times of some sort; people who want to talk about what's going well and those who need encouragement to take the next step. Anyone.

What is a typical session like?
I meet directees at the Loyola Spirituality Center in St. Paul. Each one-hour session begins and ends with prayer, and often a candle is lit as a symbol of God ’s presence.  The directee sets the agenda with whatever she or he needs to say that day. Topics may include
- Finding focus for my spiritual life
- Exploring forms of prayer: centering prayer, breathing, psalms, etc.
- Relational difficulties or tough transitions: finding God's way for me
- Integrating work in my spiritual life
- Discussing spiritual books, poetry, movies, or dreams
- Finding God in nature - nature spirituality
- Recovering balance in daily life.
- How my body can be part of my spirituality

Meetings usually take place once a month, though that is negotiable, as is the fee.  Between meetings, I hold the directee in prayer.
See the Spiritual Direction link for more information.
